A date for helping with planting in downtown Atlantic has been set, according to Downtown Beautification Representative Jan Kinnison. Kinnison announced the date during the Atlantic Community Promotion Commission (CPC) meeting last week.
Kinnison told the CPC the planting date would be May 12, and last year’s planting event was “very successful” and “very fun.” She said approximately 200 people came and helped clean up flower beds and plant petunias along Chestnut Street, the city park and Walnut Street.
Last year, a wide variety of age groups, ranging from retired people to young families and their school-aged children were ready to lend a hand on the day of the planting starting at about 4 p.m. The planting project began at the Rock Island Depot at the north end of Chestnut where volunteers got instructions.
Petunias were being planted at nodes along Chestnut, from the depot to Seventh Street, and some planting was planned in the city park as well, and the flowers came in a variety of colors
The flower planting project is coordinated by the Downtown Beautification group which receives funding from the Community Promotion Commission and has received donations from individuals and businesses in the past to help pay for the plantings.
The event was also sponsored by the 80 businesses that participate in the Community Promotion Package through the Chamber. Through their support, registered volunteers received a free t-shirt and dinner, which was held at the depot, after the planting was completed.
McCurdy and Kinnison both told the CPC on Thursday that because of the number of volunteers, most of the planting was done in a couple of hours, although three hours were aside for the planting.
In a release about the event last year, McCurdy said, “This is a fun event that helps our community image and pride, and of course, we need a number of volunteers to make this happen. We need volunteers with a variety of skills.”
McCurdy also said last year seeing the numerous volunteers planting made an impression on at least one group of visitors coming to Atlantic looking for a restaurant to eat at. She said the big number of people made the visitors wonder what was going on in Atlantic.
