Trojans Basketball JV Roundup: Atlantic moves to 7-1 with victories over Kuemper, Denison

The Trojans junior varsity basketball squad improved their season record to 7-1 on the season with victories this week over Carroll Kuemper and Denison.

Atlantic came out on top in a nail-biter last Saturday night at AHS, defeating Kuemper 48-46, ultimately holding on after leading almost the entire way. The Trojans led 11-10 after one quarter and 30-26 at the halftime break.

The four-point cushion carried into the fourth quarter when Atlantic led 39-35 before finishing Kuemper off.

“It was a tight game throughout, if free throws were made, it may not have been so close,” coach Trace Petersen said. “But it was a great effort.”

Atlantic converted 11-of-23 free throw attempts.

Jordan Holmes led all scorers with 26 points in the night and junior guard Taylor Peterson added 11 points, making it two Trojans players in double digits.

Team Scoring (01/03): Jordan Holmes 26, Taylor Petersen 11, Russ Fairfield 4, Alec Guttenfelder 3, Will Cord 3, Derek Tjepkes 1

Trojans drop Denison 49-42

Atlantic jumped out to a 15-9 lead after one quarter and pushed their lead to 10 points at the halftime break en route to a 49-42 over Denison Tuesday night on the road.

Denison threatened to close the gap in the second half, trimming the deficit down to one point at 32-31 after the third quarter, but Atlantic was able to hold on in the fourth.

More troubles at the free throw line almost cost Atlantic again as the team went just 5-for-19 from the stripe, but the team in due course stabilized to persevere to the victory.

“Five for 19 from the free throw line made the game unnecessarily close, however, we kept our composure down the stretch on the road to get a win,” Petersen said.

Jordan Holmes led the way again for the Trojans, finishing with 18 points while Alec Guttenfelder added 11.

“We had big shots from Alec, Kellan Benn and another huge night from Jordan Holmes, who has been dominant for us,” Petersen said.

Holmes is averaging 21 points per game and 12 rebounds for the Trojans JV.

Team Scoring (01/06): Jordan Holmes 18, Alec Guttenfelder 11, Taylor Petersen 9, Kellan Benn 5, Derek Tjepkes 4, Russ Fairfield 2
