Holiday festivities underway in Atlantic

With Christmas being only a little more than three weeks away, holiday activities in Atlantic are in full swing. A variety of activities are available for holiday lovers all through the season in Atlantic.
The annual Lighted Christmas Parade will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. Entry forms for the parade are available at the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce. Though there is no particular theme for the parade, every entry must utilize Christmas lights. Line-up will be held on Sixth Street between Chestnut and Walnut Streets from 5 to 6 p.m. The parade will begin at 6 p.m. and process down Chestnut Street toward the Rock Island Depot. First, Second, and Third place awards will be given for parade the first place winner will be awarded a traveling trophy for the year. After the parade, fireworks will be launched over the Rock Island Depot Building.
All through the holiday season, Santa will be available at various times for children and families to visit at his cabin in City Park. On the following Thursday evenings, Santa will be taking visitors from 5:30 to 7 p.m.: Dec. 4, Dec. 11, and Dec. 18. The cabin will be open for visitors on the following Saturdays: Dec. 6 from 3 to 5 p.m., Dec. 13 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., and Dec. 20 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Santa will be giving out popcorn to visiting families and children who visit his cabin.
Horse carriage rides will also be available at the following times from City Park. The rides through downtown Atlantic will be offered on Dec. 6 from 3 to 5 p.m., Dec. 13 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., and Dec. 20 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
The 2008 Elect-a-Scrooge contest is under way and includes five local candidates. The candidates are Dana Halder from the Fareway Meat Department, Kathie Hockenberry from Hockenberry Family Care, Darla Jacobson from R&B Feeds, Janell Hanson of Marne Elkhorn Telephone Company, and Doug Leonard from Audiological Services of Iowa. According to a press release from the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce, “candidates are all accepting donations at their listed businesses, and many have special promotions in the works. Dana Halder is selling $20 Fareway gift cards, which are purchased for donation to the Atlantic Food Pantry. Every one who purchases a gift card for the food pantry will be entered into a drawing for a USDA Choice whole rib eye and a whole boneless pork loin. The winner will be drawn the night of the lighted Christmas parade, which is Saturday, Dec. 6.
The candidates are accepting donations of food or cash, and all donations will be given to the Atlantic Food Pantry. One dollar or one non-perishable item equals a vote. The candidate with the most votes will be crowned “Scrooge” in the lighted parade. Last year, a total of 7,095 “votes” were cast in the contest, and Mary Ann Moorman was crowned Scrooge.”
Anyone interested in voting for a candidate can drop off a dollar per vote or a non-perishable food item at the businesses listed with the candidate.
On Dec. 13, parents can bring their children to the Rock Island Depot Building to decorate cookies with Santa’s Elves from 10-11:30 a.m. The Atlantic Boys Scouts will helping with the event.
Also on Dec. 13, the annual holiday concert will be held at the First United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. Free and open to the public, the concert will feature various musical talent to celebrate the holiday season through music. At the concert, the Angel of Christmas winner will be announced. The concert is sponsored by Bonnesons, J & R Tax Service, and Unique Salon and Spa. Angels of Christmas is sponsored by UBS Financial Services.
