The NOW (Not on our Watch) group in Atlantic is taking steps to further their mission throughout the community. With a three-fold focus, the group seeks to reach out to parents and children in the community to create a network of families who have pledged to provide a safe environment for children throughout the community.
The NOW group is a group of community parents who recently signed a pledge to be part of a network of families who have promised to be a support for kids and teens and help provide safe activities for kids of the community.
According to group founder Sally Meyer, the group now has planned three steps to raising awareness of the needs of children and teens in the community and help provide them safe alternatives to risky behaviors.
Firstly, the group plans to take the stories and perspectives of teens to the community. Meyer said that many parents aren’t aware of the challenges their children face in today’s society, including the pressure to conform and be a part of the “in crowd.” The group hopes to raise that awareness and help teens and children get their stories and perspectives heard. To do this, the kids have the opportunity to tell their stories anonymously about their own struggles and some of the choices they face at school and at home. Any teen or child who is interested in telling their story may send it via e-mail to info@lullabyefoundation.org or send by postal mail to 8 E. 32nd Street. Unless otherwise specified, the identities of the contributors will be kept confidential.
In addition, the NOW group will be continue to gather and compile a directory of families who have signed the NOW pledge. Meyer said she would like to see each family or individual get a page to design and include whatever information they would like, such as contact information, activities they like, and the names and ages of their children. With such a directory, a parent who may need someone to supervise their children for a day may find other families they can trust to provide safe and fun activities for their children. Eventually, the group hopes to create an interactive website where parents can log on and post activity plans and invite other children. If for example, a family is planning a day trip, they can alert other parents that they have room for another child in their vehicle if they would like to join.
The third step for the group is to coordinate with other organizations and groups with similar focus and mission. They would like to coordinate with service organizations, schools, and community groups to provide free programs, activities, and information for the families of the community who need extra support and awareness of the needs of the community. The group has tentatively scheduled two school programs in February and March at the Washington and Schuler Elementary schools to begin helping the kids of the community.
