The 2008 Elect-a-Scrooge competition is underway in Atlantic and another candidate has joined the competitors for the contest. Janell Hanson, who works at Marne Elkhorn Telephone Company, is participating in the contest. Hanson is collecting donations at her place of work
The Elect-a-Scrooge Contest raises money and collects food for the Atlantic food pantry. Candidates campaign for votes and one dollar or one non-perishable food item counts as one vote with proceeds going to the pantry. The candidate with the most votes will be elected Scrooge and be named the Grand Marshall in the Lighted Christmas Parade on Dec. 6. In addition to Hanson, the candidates include Dana Halder from the Fareway Meat Department, Kathie Hockenberry from Hockenberry Family Care, Darla Jacobson from R&B Feeds, and Doug Leonard from Audiological Services of Iowa. Candidates are excepting donations where at their places of employment and Dana Halder is selling $20 Fareway gift cards, which are purchased for donation to the Atlantic Food Pantry. Every one who purchases a gift card for the food pantry will be entered into a drawing for a USDA Choice whole rib eye and a whole boneless pork loin. The winner will be drawn the night of the lighted Christmas parade.
To help supply the food pantry, KJAN radio is also participating in the Elect-a-Scrooge contest. On Thursday evening from 4 to 7 p.m., station representatives will be at the Rock Island Depot building to take donations. For every dollar or non-perishable food item dropped off, participants will receive a raffle ticket for a $500 drawing. From Friday, Nov. 21 through Friday, Dec. 5, cash donations may be dropped off at the station for a chance in the raffle. The raffle drawing will be announced on the radio on Dec. 8 and the winner has until the end of that business day to claim their prize at the station.
