Wesley Heritage House hosted the Good Samaritan Benefit dinner with Ed Podolak as speaker on Sunday, Nov. 9. Podolak told of his years with the University of Iowa and the Kansas City Chiefs football teams as quarterback and halfback.
Beef dinner
A menu included grilled beef tenderloin, garlic twice-baked potato, Key West vegetables, a spinach, almond, strawberry salad, and a variety of cheesecakes for dessert.
The event was attended by approximately 100 guests coming from as far away as Omaha, Indianola, Des Moines and Colorado.
Podolak spoke about many memories he had while playing football in Atlantic and acknowledged several people from the Atlantic community who gave coverage to the sports events in the Atlantic News-Telegraph and other newspapers, and saw that the event was printed in the Omaha papers, as well as the KJAN radio coverage of the games.
Football Auction
After the dinner, Rex McDermott auctioned off three Iowa Footballs autographed by Podolak, along with two press box passes for the Iowa vs. Purdue game on Nov. 15. Patsy Wood, assistant administrator, said, “Everyone had a good time with the auction as Rex brought the highest bidder for each item. One autographed football was given as a door prize, with Iola Muller as winner.”
Just before dessert was served, Dorothy Podolak was honored on her birthday, and everyone sang “Happy Birthday” to her.

Proceeds from the dinner event went to the Good Samaritan Fund which assists residents of Heritage House whose financial resources have become exhausted.
