Three Griswold boys runners place in top seven at Harlan Invite
Jamie Meek leads the way once again for Tigers
The Griswold Tigers cross-country team had to settle for 4th place at the Harlan meet but was delighted they had three runners in the top seven. Jamie Meek and Johnny Fuller, Glenwood’s outstanding runner, set the race pace. Fuller, ranked 6th in 3A, had a little more sprint at the end to claim 1st in 17:13, just 6 seconds ahead of Meek. Meek, a junior, hasn’t placed lower than 3rd so far this season is rated 9th in 1A polls.
Jared Hoffman’s terrific performance was a highlight for the Tigers. Hoffman stormed back after struggling with health issues at the last two meets to claim fifth place. The senior and 2-time state qualifier in the 800 meters worked his way up to the chase pack and turned on his sprint speed to finish the last ½ mile to finish in 17:39, just one second behind St Albert’s lead runner. Hoffman ran almost 30 seconds faster than last year when he finished 24th at the same event. Austan Haynes, coming off an impressive second place finish at Audubon, continues to prove he is an elite runner clocking in at 18:03 for 7th place.
“Harlan is kind of like a state meet with the large number of runners and high level of competition. The difference is you are running against some of the best 1A teams in St Albert and Woodbine along with top 3A and 4A schools,” according to Coach Jane Hall Chaillie. “To place three individuals in the top 10 at a meet like this is practically unheard of.”
Josh Ridlen and Anthony Drogo both ran sub-20’s 19:30 and 19:44 ending up in 48th and 54th place. “They looked a little tired, but we have had super demanding week. A little rest should go a long way,” shared Coach Chaillie. Daniel Wyman ran 20:31 to place 74th and Jack Brown placed 85th in 21:35. Dylan Newell did a great job in the junior varsity with a time of 19:48 and 9th place finish in the 91 runner field.

Jacob Maass was the top junior high runner for the Tigers. He placed 33rd covering the 3K course in 12:54. Mason Anstey (55th), Grant Haynes (61st), and Collin Fast (78th) also competed for the Griswold team.
Moore and Freund Medal
The Harlan meet had the feel of a western Iowa all-star meet with ranked Harlan, Atlantic, and St. Albert capturing the first three team places. Lady Tigers Lauren Moore and Brandi Freund demonstrated lots of race savvy by positioning themselves in the top flight of runners. Moore finished ahead of all but St Albert’s lead runner in 16:55 and 13th place. Freund turned on her speed in the final stretch to claim 18th in a time of 17:09.
“There was a real battle for the top 20 spots in the race. Lauren and Brandi were running against a lot of girls who have placed in the top 20 at the state meet. It is tough to run the morning after homecoming festivities, but they both did a super job. A few more seconds off their times and they are right up in the top 10,” according to Coach Jane Hall Chaillie.
A little short-handed due to conflicts with other sporting events the Lady Tigers relied on team members with limited varsity and big race experience. The strong work ethic of Brittan Haynes continues to show as she improved her time by over a minute from a year ago and moved up 9 places. She ended the race in 74th in a time of 19:55. Freshman Taylor Watson had what was no doubt her best meet so far this season. She was only seconds behind Haynes and took 75th. Lauren Fast rounded out the scoring for the Lady Tigers with a time of 21:24 and 83rd place. Kaci Croxell finished in 87th. The team ended the day in 10th.
“It certainly hurt to have three of our experienced runners gone, but it gave some of the other girls a chance to get a feel for the type of competition we will be facing for the rest of the season. They all worked hard to improve their times. They are doing what every coach wants by improving continually,” according to Coach Chaillie.
The junior high girls’ race was one of the closest contested events of the day. Lady Tiger, Allison Young, claimed her 4th straight individual title by defeating Emma Ford of Lewis Central by 4 seconds. The pair traded leads throughout the 3K run, but in the end it was Young crossing the finish line in 11:45 for first place. There were 63 runners in the race with the majority of them representing 3A and 4A schools.
